Haven’t done much in the past couple days. So “Mello Can Nap Anywhere” + “Near is a Dick” naturally equals this, right? This started out as a silly little picture, but from it I’ve taken away the importance of panel-sizing. You can barely see what Near’s written in the first panel (just a smiley face and his name over and over again) but the second panel is HUGE. Admittedly, it started out as just a quick doodle of Mello….then Near’s hair kind of determined the size of the second panel. His hair is always so big. So fluffy ….so sleepy…. Work on panel sizing!
So I was trying to go for a skull-mask Dia De Muertos feel to this (those are supposed to be marigolds on the sides)….but I think it ended up more as creepy Skeletor cosplay? Hahah. I think I’m happiest with Mello’s crotch … … … ANYway.
I have a habit of doing initial sketches in a hard lead (like, 4H), because it feels paler! ….but then it leaves deep gouges in the paper. I need to break that habit!
Done in a variety of pencils (I need a new 8B!) completed on 02/18/12 – way too early for Dia De Los Muertos. ….but now I want a hand-held skull mask.
(arg, still more Near….my “Near” cloud is bigger than my “Matt” cloud….how did that happen!?)
I’m so tired – only fitting to post this. Still more Near and Mello. Why? I don’t know. Near would make a good pillow, I think, and Mello would nap wherever, hmm.
I’m disappointed – I couldn’t make my brush the same way as in the last picture….and I have trouble saving them. Ah well, more practice making them….
I need to work more on anatomy-Mello took forever to arrange.
Yesterday I said the snow made me think of Near. I think it’s because I think of Near as a pillow or a blanket, to cuddle up with at the fire. …Then I wondered if maybe it’s because he’s almost all white, like a snowman! That is the long and short of this picture. Done start to finish in PS CS5.
This is probably the least amount of time I’ve spent coloring a picture, yet it’s probably my favorite (I wonder – because I didn’t spend so long I got sick of it???). I’m trying to get a looser feel for the colors – this was a cool tip on brush settings….which was the only part I actually read. XD Must read the rest later….
Quick and random sketch (fully in PS). Still messy, but this isn’t going anywhere, so I figured what the heck. Near! Originally he was all shocked and appalled at L & M fighting, but then I discovered the little bastard master-minded it all – only bringing one chocolate bar with him. This is Near’s “just as planned” face.
….also, where did he get that elephant? He suddenly picked it up out of nowhere….I like it.
I’ve been drawing a lot of Near lately – how odd. I think it’s because it’s winter….
This was supposed to be just a quick sketch to work on hands and body placement….but then I decided to color it and it took much, much longer. I do need to work on colors….choosing colors for a reason instead of, “whee, I like pink!” Near and Mello are, at their core, very similar (I wish they got along better!) – so at some points I tried to make their clothes merge. I wonder if that is apparent….is it TOO apparent? Hmm. Note to self, work on coloring!
How about the back wall? What is up with that? It looked so empty and I thought herbarium mounts would give an intellectual feel, suitable to M&N. Plus I like herbarium mounts – they are so cool! XD I included Pine and Gingko, cause they’re easy/fun to draw, and then Foxglove and Cassava, because they are poisonous. XD.
Completed 2/11/12 (yay, palindromic date!) using PS CS5for everything, including initial sketch.
I’ve been reading too much of Akane’s stuff – too much Mello and Near XD. I like the idea of Mello just carrying Near around the house. Wouldn’t it be cute? Wouldn’t L be happy they were getting along? And then Near had to be a creep and ruin it! XD

Hello! With this picture my aims were “background” and colored tones. I don’t think I did as well as I would have liked, but it is better than nothing, I suppose.
I think I enjoy Death Note because of the characterization. Poor Light is being judged by L on how he handles the kids. Mello is just happy to be outside and wants to see everything (but then tuckers himself out) – I thought of him as a bit of a monkey. Near…Near is just being a dick at the end. Poor Light!
There were originally some words for this – but I figured the meaning comes across without it? Light is worried Mello will fall. Then asks L to take Mello. How complex!

I have to try harder to remember my art lessons from five years ago! I keep making silly mistakes! :-o Finished January 14th, 2012, using 6B amd 2B pencils.
